In the past, iron ore was mined on three iron ranges the Cuyuna, Mesabi and Vermilion and also in Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. Today, only the Mesabi Range still has iron ore/taconite mining taking place. Clay is mined in the Minnesota River Valley. Clay is used in making bricks, porcelain, tiles, and medicines.

The term Iron Range refers collectively or individually to a number of elongated iron-ore mining districts around Lake Superior in the United States and Canada. Despite the word "range", the iron ranges are not mountain chains, but outcrops of Precambrian sedimentary formations containing high percentages of iron. Next, head to Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, just a five minute drive from Hibbing. Open year-round, this one-of-a-kind facility is the Museum of the Iron Range, with exhibits that highlight the land, people and mines of the region, from pre-history to today.
Then in 1884, iron ore was discovered near Lake Superior, and mining became an important industry. At one time underground iron mines stretched across three mountain ranges in northern Minnesota, but by 1900 the Mesabi Iron Range and its famed high-grade taconite ore became the range of choice.
