They are lifted by cams on a horizontal rotating shaft.As the cam moves from under the stamp, the stamp falls onto the ore below, crushing the rock, and the lifting process is repeated at the next pass of the cam.

The Puritan was a small scale producer during the Cedar Mining District (1870s-1900s) in the Acton area. Taken from LA County Office of the Assessor’s site. The stamp mill is located on lot 4.
